Meet The Artisans

 

Justin Leitner

Justin, the owner of Leitner Studios, is local to Durham with over 20 years of painting experience. He specializes in miniature oil paintings with gold leaf embellishments. His work strives to capture the silent energy of nature with the use of powerful color combinations, abstracted landscapes and animals. You’ll find an array of mini oil paintings, prints, stickers and magnets.

 

Nanette Pengelley

Nanette is a queer, Jamaican-American jeweler, metalsmith, and educator from south Florida. She studied in Boston, and Florence. After graduating from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2015 with her BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Nanette has been exploring her practice within her brand, Hew Jewelry. She currently lives in Durham, North Carolina, and spends summers teaching in New England.

 

Julie Hinson

Born and raised in Durham Julies pots focus on functionality and highlighting the beauty of North Carolina clay. In 2020 Julie founded Outer Loop Arts in Durham where she makes her work and teaches private classes. Currently Julie is focusing on building the largest wood-fired kiln in Durham on the property of local non-profit Joshs Hope.

 

Kahlila Shapiro

A native of Los Angeles, Kahlila has called Durham home since 1997. For almost three decades, Kahlila has been designing and creating original glass art through stained glass, flamework, furnace and fusing. She has studied glass across the country including Penland School of Craft, Corning Museum Studio, and Murano, Italy. She plans to continue her education through studios in Berlin and Barcelona in the near future.

 

Kasey Sorrell

Kasey is an artist growing out of Durham, NC. She currently works as a studio assistant at Claymakers Community Studio, where she experiments with abstract, biomorphic forms and thrown and altered shapes. Her inspiration comes from studying living things and aspects of those entities that may be overlooked. Kasey has a drive to understand the expansive relationship between the natural worlds evolution and the human experience, which she aspires to find ways to communicate through photography, collage, and clay.

 

Crystal Folmar

Bright Sunny Studio is the creative work of Crystal Folmar, a multidisciplinary artist and printmaker based in Durham, NC. In her practice, Crystal creates unique upcycled clothing, textiles, and limited-edition prints. Each piece is rooted in sustainable practices and celebrates the many wonders of the natural world.

 

Kelly Walsh

Kelly Walsh is a hand weaver, natural dyer, and textile artist. She is fascinated by the tactile nature of textiles and their practical purpose in our daily lives. She works exclusively with natural fibers, seeking out sustainably grown, processed and dyed yarn wherever she can.

 

Ilana Weisman & Molly Cooper

Bittergoods is a small, woman-owned business based in Durham, NC, designing and making accessories and gifts for bitter (and sweet) people. Owner Ilana illustrates the original art behind their products and owner Molly hand-beads their accessories and keeps the business running. Their collection of claw clips, beaded necklaces, and more shows off their love of plants, fun cocktails, local landmarks, and favorite foods.
