Metals
liberty arts’ metals department offers classes, rentals, events, and programming that engages our community in metal casting, welding, and plasma cutting.
Classes
Liberty Arts offers a variety of beginner and intermediate classes in the Metals department. Classes in welding and plasma cutting take place at our studio at 918 Pearl Street. Metal casting classes take place at our Foundry at 530 Foster Street in Durham Central Park. Visit our class site to start learning today!
arc to autonomy
Liberty Arts provides a comprehensive 3-part Welding Studio series, with a 4th optional class for students who want additional one-on-one guidance. The progression of Arc to Autonomy is designed to move students from beginner-level skills to independent studio access. Each level builds on the one before it, increasing in technical ability, troubleshooting skills, and overall responsibility in the metals shop.
Successful completion of Welding Studio 103 qualifies students for equipment rental without an instructor present (pending studio approval).
equipment rentals
Students that have been cleared for Metals Equipment Rental can work independently in Liberty Arts Studio on personal projects. For more information on renting time with our MIG welders & various tools, please visit our Rental Information page.
community partnerships
Liberty Arts partners with local schools, universities, and other non profit organizations to provide education in metal casting, welding, and plasma cutting. Past partnerships have included Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University, Stand Up Speak Out NC, the Durham VA, and The Joel Fund.
