Scratch bowl & Aluminum Pour

Students will create their own design to carve into a sand mold. They will then observe while Metal Casting instructors pour aluminum to cast their designs. A few students can be a part of the casting process if willing to suit up in appropriate PPE. After metal cools, students will leave with completed cast aluminum bowls.

Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours

Scratch tile & Aluminum Pour

Students carve a design of their own creation into a tile-shaped sand mold. They then observe while Metal Casting instructors pour molten aluminum to cast their designs. A few students can be a part of the casting process if willing to suit up in appropriate PPE. After the metal cools, students take home their unique cast aluminum tiles.

Duration: 2.5-3.5 hours

Glass Suncatcher

GLASS

By assisting an experienced glass blower, students will learn about molten glass properties and how to form and shape it into a Suncatcher.

Duration: 2-3 hours

Number of Students: 8 to 16

Glass Suncatcher/ornament & Stand

Glass/Metals

Students will split into two groups; one group will help make a glass suncatcher (or round ornament) in the glass studio, while the other group builds the object’s stand by welding and grinding pre-rolled steel. The two groups will swap activities halfway through. Each student will leave with a completed glass suncatcher/ornament and a metal stand for it to hang on.

Duration: 3-4 hours

Number of Students: 10 to 16

Glass Pumpkin & Pedestal

Glass/Wood

Students will split into two groups; one group will help make a glass pumpkin in the glass studio at Liberty Arts, while the other group turns a wood pedestal on a lathe at the Bull City Woodshop. The two groups will swap activities halfway through. Each student will leave with a completed glass pumpkin and a wood pedestal for it to sit on.

Duration: 4-4.5 hours

Number of Students: 6 to 8

Cost: $190 per person/$1,000 minimum

Glass Sunken Bowl

Glass pumpkin - flameworking

With the help of an experienced flameworker, students will learn to melt and shape glass into a small glass pumpkin using a table top torch.

Duration: 2-2.5 hours

Glass Flowers - flameworking

Glass

With the guidance of an experienced flameworker, students will learn the fundamentals of borosilicate glass and work independently to make their own unique glass flowers. Instructor will provide vase(s) for the flower bouquet.

Glass ornament - flameworking

Working with an experienced flameworker, students will learn how to use glass to create a variety of glass ornaments.

Duration: 2-2.5 hours

Glass marbles & paperweights - flameworking

Working with an experienced flameworker, students will learn how to make marbles and small paperweights from molten glass.

Duration: 2-2.5 hours

Glass jewelry making - flameworking

Working with an experienced flameworker, students will learn how to make pendants, rings, or earrings from molten glass.

Paint-a-bull

Bring a piece of Durham home with you! In this hands-on workshop, students will customize their very own 3D-printed magnet replica of Major the Bull, Durham’s beloved mascot. Created from a 3D scan of the original downtown sculpture, these miniature bulls are ready for your creative touch.
